What is the Place of Community and Neighborhood
in Health Disparities Research forum
During the 2004-2005 academic year, the Center for Interdisciplinary Health Disparities Research will host a series of forums central to the issues of health disparities. On February 25th the first of these forums was held, looking at the topic "What is the place of Community and Neighborhood in Health Disparites Research" The forum included a panel of persons whose diverse interests and experiences are able to view community involvment in health disparities through different lenses. The forum moderator was Rob Chaskin Ph.D., sociologist at the University of Chicago and author of Building Community Capacity. |

Klinenberg, Ph.D, NYU sociologist and author of "Heat
Wave: A Social Autopsy of Disaster in Chicago".![]() |
Also featured on the panel were Jackie
Reed, A.M. founder
and current Executive Director of the Westside
Health Authority in Chicago.

Another distinguished member of
the panel included Cedric
Herring, Ph.D. author and sociologist at the University of Illinois
- Chicago. Dr Herring has written several books, including Skin
Deep: How Race and Complexion Matter in the "Color-Blind" Era and Empowerment
in Chicago: Grassroots participation in Economic Development and Poverty
Alleviation.

In addition, Ami
Shah, M.P.H. epidemiologist and Project Coordinator with the
Sinai
Urban Health Institute of the Sinai Health System also participated
in the forum.

After the speaker presentations were concluded, a question
and answer period was held, giving the audience of more then 70 people,
(including members of the community as well as faculty from Northwestern
University, UIC, University of Chicago, Loyola University and DePaul University)
a chance to gather further knowledge and information. |
