2003-2004 CIHDR Summer Apprenticeship Program

As part of its continuing involvement in and commitment to the Chicago community, the Center for Interdisciplinary Health Disparities Research created an annual Summer Apprenticeship Program, beginning with the 2003-2004 academic year.

Applications and information about the program were sent to all physical, biological and social science teachers of the secondary schools in the 15 south side Chicago neighborhood areas. Teachers were requested to nominate those students they thought would benefit from working with and assisting the investigators of the four CIHDR research projects. Over 50 applications were received and from those applicants, four candidates were selected. The four students picked were Chibuzo Ubagharaji of Kenwood Academy, Alexandra Hughes from South Shore High Schools' School of Entrepreneurship, Kyneshia Makle from the Hyde Park Career Academy and Tiffany Wong of Dr. Martin Luther King College Prep High School.

Ms. Wong assisted Dr. Suzanne Conzen with her study of mammary tumor growth while Mr. Ubagharaji worked with Dr. Funmi Olopade on her study of Nigerian and Chicago South Side patient samples. Ms. Makle contributed to Dr. Susan Gehlert's community-based participatory research and Ms. Hughes provided assistance to Dr. Martha McClintock in comparing gene regulation between groups of laboratory rats. CIHDR will continue to stay in contact with each of the apprentices and follow their pursuits towards education and careers in science.

The Center looks forward to next years four apprentice program candidates with great anticipation.
