2004-2005 CIHDR Summer Apprenticeship Program
This years Apprenticeship students were given a most daunting task, but they were more then up to the challenge. As with last year, the students were drawn from area high schools, bases upon teacher recommendations. Five apprentices were selected this year, an increase over last years' four students. Our five apprentices are: Jaamal Conway, Sophomore at Paul Robeson High School, Shonquana Hamilton, Senior at Young Women's Leadership Charter School, (both worked with Dr. Sarah Gehlert in Project 3), Daja Nicholson, Senior at South Shore School of Entrepreneurship (assisted Dr. Martha McClintock in Project 1), Malika Petty, Senior at Kenwood Academy High School (worked on Project 4 with Dr. Suzanne Conzen) and Jerome Scarborough II, a Senior at Harlan Community Academy High School (worked with Dr. Funmi Olopade in Project 2).
The five student apprentices were assigned to assist with some of the standing projects that are ongoing at CIHDR, as well as help develop an original mini-series called "Livin' In Your Body 4 Life." The series was created under the supervision of Dr. Gehlert, CIHDR Director and the Project 3 staff, along with the apprentices. The series will air in Chicago Public Schools, not only on the south side but elsewhere, as well as on cable in the Chicago area. The idea arose from CIHDR's 2005 South Side Breast Cancer Summit, as part of their identifying getting information to young teens as a community outreach priority. The planning for the series was the responcibility of the five apprentices, along with the Project 3 staff, including Annie Pope and Jewell Brazelton and the office of the Associate Provost Steve Gabel. The series is an interview-format, with the apprentices talking with experts such as LeRoy Graham, pediatric pulmonologist from Atlanta and Nikia Hammonds, a breast cancer survivor, diagnosed at 16. Original music and poetry is also featured in the series. To see pictures from the 2006 screening, click HERE. |
