South Side Breast Cancer Summit:
Expanding Knowledge and Providing Support

Walking past the Metropolitan Apostolic Community Church during the late morning or early afternoon hours of April 30, you might have felt the draw of an inexplicable, yet irresistible force. That force would have been
EMPOWERMENT!
With the underlying sounds of Eli Hoenai drawing on ancient African rhythms, a tone was set for the day.
Sarah Gehlert, Ph.D., Director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Health Disparities Research welcomes the participants to the summit.
Michelle Obama, JD, deliverers the opening remarks.
The Reverend Dr. Leon D. Finney Jr, provides the invocation for the summit.
Dr. Gehlert presents an overview of the days' proceedings.
A crowd of dozens of women (and a few men) all concerned with the issues of breast cancer rates in African-American women listed with high interest.
Annie Pope, MSW, summit chairwoman, spoke towards the importance of forums such as these.
Dr. Christopher Masi of the University of Chicago was Master of Ceremonies for the summit.
Dr. Funmi Olopade of the UC Department of Medicine and CIHDR talks about positive and negative receptor tag research as they pertain to breast cancer.
Panel member Dr. Henry Wiggins, Radiologist at St. Bernard's Hospital stresses the importance of mammograms in women.
Another panel participant, Barbara Akpan, RN, BSN spoke to keeping in touch with your faith AND your physician, as well as participating in clinical trials.
Third panel member, Nikia Hammonds, a breast cancer survivor since the age of 16, provided living proof of early self-examination and testing success.
